🐝 A busy week of Outdoor Learning! 🍂🌿

What a fantastic week back at Outdoor Learning! We had lots to explore, starting with a very special discovery — an old, empty wasp nest found on the school site by our gardener, Ryan. A big thank you to Ryan for keeping the nest so the children could investigate it safely and find out more about these fascinating insects.

The children were amazed to discover that wasps build their nests from tiny pieces of chewed wood and plant material, which they mix with their saliva to create a paper-like material. We looked closely at the layers and patterns in the nest and talked about how the wasps work together to build their home. 🐝

We also learned that wasp nests are usually only used for one season. As the weather gets colder, the colony dies off and the nest is left empty — just like the one we discovered. The following year, wasps will normally start a new nest rather than reuse the old one.

After our wasp investigation, we headed outside for an autumn bug hunt, searching carefully amongst leaves, logs and plants to see what tiny creatures we could find. 🐌🕷️🍁 We finished our session with some nature art, using the colours, textures and treasures we found outdoors to create our own designs.

It was a wonderful week full of curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning — and the children left with big smiles and plenty of new wasp and bug facts to share! 😊🐝🍂
