Turning Waste into Energy!

Our School Council and Eco-Rangers enjoyed an exciting visit to Exeter Energy Recovery Facility, discovering how our waste can be transformed into electricity. The trip inspired the children to think about recycling, reducing waste and making greener choices for our school and planet.

Our School Council and Eco-Rangers were lucky enough to visit Exeter Energy Recovery Facility to discover what happens to our waste once it leaves our bins. The visit gave the children a fascinating insight into where our general waste goes and how it can be used to generate electricity.

During the tour, we watched as bin lorries delivered waste collected from across Mid Devon, before a giant mechanical claw moved it around the facility. We learnt how the waste is usually burned in a special kiln, creating heat that boils water to produce steam. This steam is then used to generate electricity, helping to power around 6,000 homes in Mid Devon! Although the kiln was switched off during our visit, it was still an incredible opportunity to see the process up close and understand how waste can be turned into a valuable resource.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our children to deepen their understanding of recycling, waste management and the importance of making environmentally conscious choices. It also encouraged them to think about the small changes we can make in school to reduce waste and protect our planet.

I was incredibly impressed by the children's enthusiasm and passion for the future of our school and wider community. I look forward to seeing how they put their learning into practice and inspire others to make greener choices every day. Well done to our School Council and Eco-Rangers for being such thoughtful and enthusiastic ambassadors for our school!
