KS1 Northam Burrows Visit

On the Wednesday before half-term, Classes One and Two enjoyed a fantastic day exploring Northam Burrows and learning about the local environment.

We walked to the Northam Burrows Visitor Centre. One of the highlights of the day was climbing to the highest point on Northam Burrows, where we used our observation skills to spot key local landmarks, including Appledore Lifeboat Station, Saunton Sands Hotel, Lundy Island, the Rivers Taw and Torridge, Hartland Point and Clovelly.

Although it was a windy day, the children coped brilliantly with the challenging conditions. They embraced the elements and enjoyed experiencing the natural world first-hand, showing great resilience, enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the visit.

At the visitor centre, we enjoyed exploring the exhibitions and discovering more about the wildlife, geography and history of the area. We also got creative by making our own 3D beach huts.

Some of the children’s favourite parts of the day:

  • Elena loved looking at a starfish through the microscope.
  • Elaina was surprised by how much rubbish had been collected from the beach.
  • Monty enjoyed watching the horses being moved across the burrows.
  • Charlie P loved standing at the highest point and looking for Lundy Island.
  • Ocean enjoyed feeling the wind and spotting the seagulls overhead.
  • Lily-Rose was surprised to discover that sheep live on the burrows.

The rangers were full of praise for our children. They wrote in an email to us:

“Thank you for bringing us some lovely, polite children to explore with today. Jasper noticed how resilient and kind they were in helping each other cope with the tricky conditions and Luke said they asked some great questions while they were looking at the visitor centre exhibitions.”

We are incredibly proud of the way the children represented our school. They showed resilience, curiosity and kindness throughout the day, particularly in the windy weather, and made the most of every opportunity to learn.

We had a wonderful day, learned so much about our local area, and created some fantastic memories along the way. Thank you to the rangers for such an enjoyable and educational experience.
