Friday 26th March:  This week we looked at the Daffodil or the botanical name Narcissus. Named after a handsome young man who was given his beauty by the Gods. Daffodils were first recorded to have been cultivated in Ancient Rome (200-300BC).

We didn’t have to go far to find a range of different daffodils with a short stroll up the hill from the school. We found the verge full of hundreds of beautiful flowers.
As the pupils sat amongst the daffodils they were read the famous poem by William Wordsworth.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

We returned to school to the Outdoor Learning area where the students dissected daffodils and completed an identification grid on parts of a daffodil. They learnt about the life cycle of the daffodil.

Carrying on the poem theme the students wrote their own Acrostic Poems about daffodils.
Below is one of the students poems.

Dancing Daffodils
Are around us everywhere.
Faces as bright as gold.
Floating in the air,
Over hills and far away.
Dangling and drooping,
In fields and on river banks.
Living forever on until they die.

We finished the session learning how to make an origami daffodil flower. Trickier than we thought and quite a challenge.

 

Friday 23rd April, we took advantage of the glorious weather and moved over to the sports pitches to look at some team development skills.

The year 5/6 pupils learnt the importance of five key skills when solving problems in a group:

Teamwork ~ Communication ~ Leadership ~ Planning ~ Trust

 

Friday 30th April:  We returned to the Outdoor Learning area this week and did some pond dipping.

The pupils proved very good at this, collecting a total of twenty-six newts.

 

We then whittled some hazelnut sticks and cooked dough “twists” on the fire.

Finished off with a bit of strawberry jam- delicious.
