Outdoor Learning - Spring 2020

News from Outdoor Learning!

07/02/2020 We have made the most of the glorious weather this week tidying up the outdoor learning area.

Class 4 pupils have tidied up the fruit beds and planted out some garlic cloves.
We have also started to chit our seed potatoes, this year trying “Rocket” and “Jazzy” varieties.

Some of the Class 3 pupils have made bird feeders and hung them up outside. We also have sown some peas and potted on our winter lettuce seedlings. The warm weather certainly has brought the flowers out and we were pleased to find loads of Toad Spawn in the pond.

06/03/2020 Despite the damp weather the pupils still managed to get out and do some gardening this week. With much anticipation it was time to plant out the seed potatoes that we have been chitting on the class 3 windowsill for the past month.

Once again we are taking part in the “Grow your own potatoes” challenge for schools. It has now become the largest growing scheme of its kind with over 2 million children taking part in learning where potatoes come from, how they grow and the health benefits.

The pupils were amazed to hear that potatoes were first discovered in Peru, South America about 8000 years ago. Transported, in 1536 to Spain, before Sir Walter Raleigh introduced them to Ireland in 1589.

We planted out some early “Rocket” variety seed potatoes and main crop “Estima”.

11/03/2020  A group of pupils from Class 3 and 4 visited “The Firs Care Home” in Witheridge as part of their Outdoor Learning. Pupils, working alongside James the Care Home Gardener, tidied up some of the flower beds and started to renew some of the plants in pots.
