Gardening Club - Class 3 - 2021
25/03/2021 - Well we were blessed with beautiful sunshine for the start of our gardening sessions for Class 3. The Outdoor Learning area was looking stunning with its fine display of daffodils and celandines.
It was time to do some sowing this week with a bit of a catch up. We sowed in trays beans, courgettes, sweet peppers, chard and sunflower seeds in the hope we can get a good display later in the year.
We also planted out our “Jazzy” seed potatoes that had been busy chitting over the last month.
01/04/2021: We had another busy session gardening today. The warmer weather seems to have brought all the weeds up.
The pupils potted on their Sunflower seedlings, French beans and Courgette seedlings that they had sown last week.
We then sowed some pumpkin, tomato and lettuce seeds.
Then it was time to roll up their sleeves and get busy weeding. Wow what an excellent job they did. Most of the beds are now ready for use.
22/04/2021 It was great to get back out in our garden area and crack on with some much-needed weeding and maintenance. The pupils planted out some late potatoes, dwarf bean plants, and direct sowed some carrots and lettuce.
We have had mixed success with our seeds in pots that we gambled on outside the classroom. The Sunflower seeds, Kohl Rabi and Chard had proved a success but Courgette and Cucumber seeds had not survived.
With the pupils we discussed the merits of growing your own veg at home so let’s hope some try it !

We were all excited today as we have had donated to us a PVC Small Greenhouse.
This will hopefully improve our success with our seedlings once germinated inside, as we move plants outside.
The pupils helped to put the greenhouse together and move our seedlings under cover.
Out in our plot the students learnt how to erect bean teepees and we have sown this year two types of climbing beans, Cobra and Blue Lake.
Finally we planted out some leeks and the pupils learnt the technique of “puddling in” the young plants.
06/05/2021: A big thank you to our gardening club members this week. The Foundation Unit play area had gradually become in need of a tidy up. Thanks to the pupils they cleared the area and have sown flower seeds in the raised bed.
