writing
At Witheridge C of E Academy, writing is at the heart of our curriculum and underpins children’s learning across all subjects. We aim to produce confident, literate and articulate writers who see themselves as authors and can write effectively for a wide range of purposes and audiences. From the earliest stages, children are taught to accurately and fluently record their ideas, developing their understanding of how vocabulary and grammar choices are shaped by audience and purpose.
In the Early Years and Year 1, writing is taught through the Read Write Inc programme, which provides a strong foundation in phonics, spelling and sentence construction. From Year 2 onwards, children build on these skills through Ready Steady Write, which supports them to develop creativity, structure and control in their writing. Across the school, we place high importance on spelling unfamiliar words, proofreading, and evaluating the effectiveness of writing. Pupils are encouraged to self-edit and improve their work, helping them to become reflective, independent writers who take pride in what they produce.
