OUR CURRICULUM

Plastic Pollution - Beach Clean

Class 3 have been very busy learning about plastic pollution and its effect on the environment. On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to welcome in Sophie, the education officer for South West Water. Sophie taught us about the devastating damages that plastic pollution is doing to our environment.

We spoke about how we can reduce our use of plastics and reuse old plastics for new purposes. The children also spent some time thinking about how many plastic items they use every day before considering equivalent substitutes made from more sustainable and less damaging materials.

On Thursday, the weather favoured us and we were able to get to Westward Ho to see for ourselves just how bad this situation is. The children used our new litter picking equipment to gather loads of plastics and damaging items from the beach and pebble ridge. We found different items ranging from reels of fishing wire to grubby old socks. We are now aiming to reuse these items to create some recycled artwork so keep your eyes peeled!

In the afternoon, we linked up with our other trust schools High Bickington and Beaford for a run around on the beach. We played games, built pebble towers and made pictures on the sand. The children were wonderfully behaved all day and showed a compassionate attitude towards one of the most serious environmental issues our planet is currently facing.

Well done Class 3,

Mr Manning
